I am pleased to say that UCI has recruited a board who is excited to join us in combatting homelessness! If you know anyone at USC or UCSB who is interested in joining a passionate team of leaders, please fill out our referral form listed below to refer them to us! We are excited to see the future of MSP! If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Geetha, MSP Director of Recruitment at [email protected].
Cecily Ma, our Director of Chapter Programs here at MSP, led an extremely informative and captivating workshop via zoom. She discussed the different measures up for vote in the 2020 election, including political candidates’ stances on homelessness in California and San Diego County. We also broke down some of the main points from this workshop into our most recent Instagram post. There are 4 days left until the election and we want to make sure you are considering the impacts of homelessness when you cast your vote! We hope this information helps guide you when filling out your ballot and helps us achieve our vision to strive for a world in which all individuals have the right to basic needs, comfort in their own personal safety, and the opportunity to rise above their situation.
Watch the workshop recording on our Youtube Channel linked below and check out our most recent Instagram post that sums up some of this great info!
On Tuesday, October 13th, San Diego City Council members unanimously approved the purchase of two hotels that within two months could become permanent homes for approximately 400 people now at a temporary shelter at the Convention Center. The article highlights members, such as Bravesh Patel, CEO of Hotel Investment Group, Attorney David Boss, Cathy Herrick, Atwood Hotel owner, and many more members of the community, who share their opinions about this project.
This project is filled with exceedingly dedicated members who are ready to serve and advocate for our neighbors at-risk-of or experiencing homelessness. Our team has done an amazing job mobilizing and making our communities stronger. In just a short time, Pelé Treviño, one of our service navigators, led the effort to help us pay a single mother’s rent of $750, and assisted another single mother to gain transportation (worth a value of $100) to escape a domestic violence situation to join her extended family in another state. We would like to give specific shoutouts to some of our dedicated VSN’s including Jenny Hua who is supporting an individual recover from the traumas he faced on the streets, developed an action plan and created referrals to help him live more independently. Ringo Leung who has created an action plan to help an elderly couple facing eviction and connected them to a family-friendly shelter and a moving company to help relocate their furniture into a storage unit for the time being. Along with all of our other members of the Service Navigation Program including, Hannah Rishik, Esther Abraham, Khyri Jones, and Julia George who have diligently been working behind the scenes leading case conferences to make our services efficient and effective.
We are so grateful to everyone who has donated! The following list highlights how we have been using the Community Relief Fund so far:
A monthly bus voucher and medication for an individual
A GED prep course for an individual to boost his resume
Partial funding for an individual to open her bank account to receive COVID-19 stimulus and food assistance
Transportation passes for a single mother and her children escaping from domestic abuse
Rent assistance to prevent a single mother and her children from eviction
Utility assistance for an individual to move into a new home
Legal document application fees for an individual to start working
We would like to give a BIG thank you to the supporters in our communities including the Albertons Company and the Morse friends and families for each donating significant amounts to our Community Relief Fund and believing in our cause.
As we continue our monthly newsletters, we hope to produce relevant, educational, and enjoyable content! We need your help to accomplish this goal! Listed above is a quick anonymous feedback form which will help us get a better idea of what you all want to hear more about in relation to homelessness! Thank you so much for your continuous dedication and support for this project! Support Our Communities
